Acting For Camera Course
The next Acting for Camera Course

Ramshorn Theatre 98 Ingram Street, Glasgow from 7th -11th April
2008 inclusive. Limited places still available....
INTRODUCTION
Theatre is unfortunately
a dying art form with almost all theatres requiring to be heavily
funded, and actors wages being very low.
On the other hand there is currently a huge proliferation of TV
Channels and new media. These new medias and TV channels require
to fill their air time with films, TV Dramas, commercials etc.,
all of which provide excellent opportunities for well paid work
for actors.
Unfortunately, almost all the teaching taking place in the various
colleges in the UK only teaches acting for stage and not for camera.
I believe these colleges are wrong to do this and may as well just
teach aspiring actors how to fill in a B1.
The technique of acting for camera is very, very different from
acting for stage.
As time is very expensive on a film set or studio, producers cannot
afford to coach actors on the set. This is one of the reasons why
we tend to see the same old faces on the telly. It is known that
these same old faces know how to act for camera and can deliver
the goods time after time, without having to do retake after retake.
It is an unfortunate truism that without having front of camera
experience, an actor is unlikely to get any work.
This Acting for Camera Course addresses the very
real need for camera training for actors.

COURSE CONTENT
The Course is run over five full days from 10 am until 5pm.
Actors are required to first do an "Introduction to Camera" in exactly
the way that Casting Directors do when they first meet the actor,
put them in front of the camera and say "tell me a bit about yourself".
The actors are asked to prepare a short audition piece for stage.
This is videotaped and then reworked as a piece for camera. At the
end of each take, the videotape is replayed on a large screen and
the actors performance is analysed. The actor will then go back
in front of the camera and redo the piece again and again until
it is perfected.
Throughout this process the actor is also taught how to act in wide
shot, mid frame and close up, all of which require different technique.
The actors are then invited to prepare an improvised piece entitled
"a trip
down memory lane" using costumes and props, but have to act the
piece out without using any dialogue whatsoever.
The actors are then given a scene to prepare for filming the very
next day.
This will involve all of the group interacting with each other.
On day 5 we ask all the actors to redo their piece to camera and
compare the difference from their original take on day one.
The improvement is invariably vast. We also invite along professionals
from the industry to show examples of their work and give a question
and answer session with the actors.
The Course is accredited by The University of Strathclyde, with
a CERTIFICATE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN ACTING FOR CAMERA.
Feedback from the course members has been incredibly positive.
We will be posting video testimonials shortly.
